Are you over-exfoliating?

Exfoliation is an essential step in every skincare regime. It is an important way to help reveal a fresh and radiant complexion by shedding dead skin cells. It can also benefit a variety of skin conditions such as premature ageing, acne, and pigmentation.

There are so many options available such as chemical and physical exfoliants in cleansers, serums and creams. You could be overdoing it without knowing and causing your skin more harm than good.

But how can you tell?

Exfoliation in essence speeds up the rate of your cell turnover to reveal newer fresher skin. With over exfoliation you prematurely reveal skin cells, this can leave you looking shiny with a tight, waxy texture.

This shine is not a healthy shine and usually underneath your skin is extremely dry and exposed which can lead to increased sensitivity to products and the sun.

If your skin is presenting in this manner I would suggest cutting down on the amount of exfoliation you are incorporating into your skin care routine.

IRRITATION

A classic sign of over-exfoliation is a red, angry and reactive skin. If you continue to over-exfoliate it can lead to a compromised skin barrier. This can often cause the problems we are trying to rectify in the first place.

When your barrier function is compromised your skin is exposed to environmental elements and it can also lead to a crepe like appearance which can exacerbate the appearance of  fine lines and wrinkles.
