Acne and Oil – Acne treatments in Melbourne

What is acne? Acne is a common skin condition, which can develop in puberty or adulthood. It will affect 80% of the human population to some degree. Many assume acne is solely due to an over-production of oil and thus attaches oily/acne products to the issue. The reality is that acne is caused when a hair follicle becomes “congested” with sebum (oil) and skin cells; we call them blackheads or whiteheads. The inflammatory progression of this state is where the bacteria enter the equation and papules and pustules are formed (Acne Vulgaris)… thick oil + skin cells + bacteria = ZITS!

It is thought that the best way to treat acne is to strip the oil from the skin as a remedy to fight troublesome break outs. but are you doing more harm than good?

The first line of defence against any inflammatory condition is the skin barrier function. This fortified by the acid mantle. If the acid mantle is compromised, the luscious epidermal layers that hold hydration and ceramides (fatty acids, lipids) are as well, leaving the skin dry and vulnerable. If the skin is dry, its immune function could be compromised, and could have a hard time fighting infection created by acne. This leads to trauma pigment and potential dermal scarring. Not fun!

The key to managing, reducing, and hopefully preventing acne formation lies in the following formula:

The perfect amount of exfoliation (please don’t use apricot scrubs or anything too aggressive to exfoliate) + proper skin hydration/moisture balance + protecting antioxidants and anti-inflammatories = bright and clear skin (easy peasy, right?)

Does eating chocolate cause Acne?

While the high amounts of processed sugar and dairy found in chocolate can be detrimental to your skin, there is no evidence       proving chocolate causes breakouts or acne.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
However, acne has close connections with the gastrointestinal tract, and many argue that the gut microbiota could be involved in the pathogenic process of acne.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Until recently, diet and psychological stress were thought to have little relevance to the pathophysiology of acne. Now with the understanding that the brain–gut–skin axis exists, it is now clear that intestinal microbes have significant effects on acne.

If you do suffer from acne or breakouts, it is a good idea to eliminate processed sugars from your diet.

DMK Enzyme Therapy in Toorak

Enzyme Therapy treats a wide range of skin concerns from ageing and acne, through to pigmentation and scarring. It has the ability to achieve long-term professional skin resolutions.

How does the Enzyme Therapy Treatment actually work?

By  combining   state-of-the-art science with innovative technology, DMK has created one of the most advanced skin revision systems available. DMK’s skin care systems include a range of exclusive  Enzyme Therapy treatments designed to work in synergy with the skin’s natural process. Enzyme Therapy is unique to DMK and focuses on what the skin naturally responds to.

Skin therapy enzymes use proteins formed in plant cells to act as organic catalysts in initiating specific chemical reactions. The DMK concept is built upon the philosophy of Remove, Rebuild, Protect and Maintain. Enzyme Therapy is our leading treatment to kick-start the Remove and Rebuild phases.

We all have it in us to have skin that is functioning well and looking healthy, but sometimes factors such as environmental elements, ageing or hormonal fluctuations can compromise the skin’s immunity, slowing circulation and lymphatic systems, causing it to weaken, age prematurely or become inflamed.

DMK Enzyme Therapy uniquely addresses various skin concerns through utilising messenger enzymes to mimic the body’s own chemistry, hydrolyse dead cell material from the skin and remove impurities through a ‘reverse osmosis’ process – that increases circulation, bringing oxygenated blood and nutrients to the skin, whilst improving lymphatic drainage and enhanced collagen production. The process leaves you with enviable fresh, healthy, oxygenated skin that is functioning optimally and literally glowing from the inside out!

DMK Enzyme Therapy is not your typical topical style facial. It is for people who want complete skin revision. Whether your skin is showing the signs of age or you suffer from a specific skin condition, we understand that healthy skin is beautiful skin, and who doesn’t want that?

Speak to our skin therapists today! We love helping you achieve your skin goals.

Are you over-exfoliating?

Exfoliation is an essential step in every skincare regime. It is an important way to help reveal a fresh and radiant complexion by shedding dead skin cells. It can also benefit a variety of skin conditions such as premature ageing, acne, and pigmentation.

There are so many options available such as chemical and physical exfoliants in cleansers, serums and creams. You could be overdoing it without knowing and causing your skin more harm than good.

But how can you tell?

radiant glow or unhealthy shine

Exfoliation in essence speeds up the rate of your cell turnover to reveal newer fresher skin. With over exfoliation you prematurely reveal skin cells, this can leave you looking shiny with a tight, waxy texture.

This shine is not a healthy shine and usually underneath your skin is extremely dry and exposed which can lead to increased sensitivity to products and the sun.

If your skin is presenting in this manner I would suggest cutting down on the amount of exfoliation you are incorporating into your skin care routine.

A classic sign of over-exfoliation is a red, angry and reactive skin. If you continue to over-exfoliate it can lead to a compromised skin barrier. This can often cause the problems we are trying to rectify in the first place.

When your barrier function is compromised your skin is exposed to environmental elements and it can also lead to a crepe like appearance which can exacerbate the appearance of  fine lines and wrinkles.

Healing from over exfoliating

The most important thing is to give your skin a break. Then seek the expertise of an experienced skin therapist who can recommend products that will help with the healing of the skin. They can also recommend which type of exfoliant is best for your skin and your skin condition not that of your friends…

Photo Rejuvenation in Toorak

Photo rejuvenation is a non invasive treatment which uses IPL technology.

what does photo rejuvenation treat?

It is designed to reduce the effects of photo ageing such as pigmentaton, fine lines and wrinkles. It is also used for the treatment on capillaries, to reduce redness and for rosacea.

how does photo rejuvenation work?

Photo rejuvenation treatments work best on lighter toned skins as the IPL technology is attracted to darker melanin an haemoglobin which in turn causes a coagulation and destruction of targeted lesions. Hence photo rejuvenation is not suitable on tanned or dark complexions, including recent sun exposure an even self tanning products if they are present on the skin.

The IPL treatments involve little to no side effects, immediately after the treatment you may be red and slightly puffy, this generally lasts up to 24 hours. The pigment will appear darker and after about 7-10 days it will lighten.

Does it hurt?

Most people describe the treatment as a sensation similar to the flicking of rubber bands on the skin. For a few hours after the photo rejuvenation treatment the area may feel like it is sun burnt.

how many sessions will i need?

Depending on the severity of your condition you may need 2-4 sessions.

Speak to your skin therapist at Reverse Skin Clinic in Toorak to book your consultation and see whether IPL is the right treatment for you.

Treatments for Pigmentation in Toorak

Pigmentation presents itself on the skin in different shapes and sizes.

Treatment recommendations:

Depending on the type and cause of your pigment there are different options for treatment. Some of the most effective are skin peels, collagen induction therapy, ipl limelight, Enzyme Therapy. Homecare is also an essential component in the reversal of pigmentation and spf is a must every day.

Benefits of treatments:

The treatments are designed to make long term structural changes to your skin and the way it functions so not only are you revising your pigmentation you are also improving your skin’s texture and structural integrity giving you a healthy skin less vulnerable to the effects of ageing.

Time Frame of alleviating: Depending on the treatment path or modality used treatment time can vary

  • Ipl usually takes around 3 sessions depending on the depth of pigment this could vary.
  • Skin needling we recommend a course of 6 however the effects of this treatment keep on getting better over the course of the year as your cells work to re-structure and lay down new collagen.
  • Treatments such as peels will take between 4 – 6, depending on the type and severity of the pigment.
  • Enzyme Therapy combined with various removal methods will usually take approximately 12 sessions then we re-evaluate to see if any further treatments are required or if a maintenance program is adequate.

Hyper pigmentation which is the most common type of pigmentation; is the darker pigment, it usually presents in brown areas that come though on the surface of the skin varying in tone and sizes depending on the cause. Hypo pigmentation is usually caused by trauma to the skin and shows up as lighter or white patches. Pigment is formed when our skin goes into defence mode, stimulating more melanin to be produced by the melanocyte as a defence mechanism.

Causes of Pigmentation

Causes for pigment can vary. In Australia we have a very harsh and damaging sun so we see a high rate of environmentally induced pigment, which has built up in our skin from years of sun exposure, lots of our pigment will be seen as it rises to the surface of our skin as young adults. In later years pigmentation can show on the surface but this was actually caused in our early childhood years so protection from a young age is vital.

Hormones are another major cause of pigmentation. Due to hormonal imbalances and dramatic changes in hormones in our life such as pregnancy, the pill, puberty, menopause and various medications, these causes can stimulate an excess of melanin to be produced which can often rectify itself after levels return to normal.

Pigment can also be caused by trauma to the skin when you are predisposed to the particular trauma. When your skin is injured and inflammation is present melanocytes are drawn to the area as a defence for your skin. This can also result in hypo pigmentation, which is a loss of pigment in your skin, we often see this with scaring.

The only symptoms of pigmentation is the physical change of colour in your skin there are no linked sensations or changes in texture.

Acne is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the pilosebaceous unit, characterised by open and closed comedones, macules, papules, pustules, cysts and scars. There is usually bacteria present. Acne can range in stages, usually classified as 1,2,3 & 4  from mild congestion and blackheads to painful inflamed cystic acne.

There are many causes of acne, which include but are not limited to

  • Hereditary
  • Hormonal; this is brought on by hormonal changes or hormonal imbalances in the body.
  • Stress induced (which effects cortisol levels)
  • Dietary; wheat, dairy and sugar can affect a skin that is prone to acne
  • Gut Function; pore digestion and other related gut issues will present on the skin

The following are a chain of events that lead to acne

Symptoms: Red inflamed areas, Blackheads, rough bump feeling below surface of skin, white heads, and pus can be present, painful bumps or nodules with or without a head.

Treatment recommendations: Enzyme therapy, alkaline wash. RP peel, Led Light Therapy

Benefits of treatments:

Managing your acne from the beginning will prevent the likely hood of scarring and post inflammatory hyper pigmentation down the track. It will improve self-confidence and raise self-esteem, while building healthy well-functioning skin for the future.

Time Frame of alleviating:

Depending on your individual case, which stage your acne is at, and the cause of the acne, the treatment time line can vary greatly. Our aim is to get the skin functioning from the inside out which can take time, and commitment to homecare from you. Generally you will start on a 12 week program. You will begin to see results within that time frame. However to completely revise your skin it could take the course of a year.

Foods to avoid:

Dairy: Dairy contains growth hormones which speeds up the process of acne. IGF1

Gluten: Some people find gluten quite hard to digest which can lead to poor gut functioning, when our gut is not functioning toxins leak into our blood supply and cells are left with a toxic environment. It also means we are not receiving the vital nutrients from our food leaving our immune system compromised and open to foreign invaders.

Sugar: perhaps the worst evil of all, sugar plays with our insulin levels spiking them telling our body to produce more insulin and causing spikes in pimple making hormones such as testosterone and adrogens.

Genetically modified Soy: Too much Soy can mess with your hormone levels. Always check if buying soy milk or tofu that it is GMO free.

Foods to eat: Alkaline foods- Green leafy vegetables, lemon water, turmeric, good fats including coconut oil, avocado, olive oil, nuts and seeds. Try and stick to eating as many natural whole foods as possible, which means eating no processed food in packaging. Try alternatives to dairy like coconut milk or almond milk.

Things to know about Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a reasonably quick facial treatment, I also call it Rapid Results, because it is after all what everyone wants isn’t it?

Perfect for:

  • sun damage.
  • lines and wrinkles
  • breakouts
  • promoting even skin tone
  • pigmentation

Most people have heard of a microdermabrasion treatment but not everyone knows what it entails.
We have a few variations of this treatment but basically when you book in for a standalone microdermabrasion treatment your skin will be cleansed with the appropriate cleanser for your skin type and then we will start the microdermabrasion treatment. We use the Clairderm Medical Saphire machine which has a long wand on it that spits out tiny little crystals that feel slightly abrasive on the skin. I think it feels like a mini vacuum cleaner, cleaning up the surface of your face. In fact this is basically what the procedure is for; it removes dead skin cells, by buffing the surface layer of your skin with a stream of tiny crystals and pulling dead skin cells and impurities up to the surface. Your therapist can adjust the suction to make it more or less abrasive feeling, depending on what you and your skin can cope with.

We finish the treatment by infusing vitamins into the skin to heal and leave the skin calm and hydrated.

Microdermabrasion is suitable for most skin types and all ages. After the treatment, you will walk out feeling like you have the cleanest of clean skins and that all the moisture and goodness of the world has found its way back into your skin. If your skin really needs to it may flake a little a day or so after the treatment.

A microdermabrasion is recommended either as a course of treatments when you start out or once a month to keep your skin nice and fresh.
